One person was killed and nine others sustained injuries when a private school bus skidded off the Beach Road and fell on the roadside near Novotel Hotel Junction on Sunday evening.

The bus also mowed down five two wheelers. The incident occurred when the students and staff of Sri Prakash Vidyaniketan were returning in a mini-bus after attending an award function. The school club had won awards for their contribution towards heritage conservation.

The students were returning happily for winning an award at the programme. Many, who were sitting on the parapet wall of the Beach Road, sustained major injuries when the bus hit them. The students also sustained major injuries, eye witnesses said.

They said the driver of the bus lost control while it was coming to the Beach Road from the Novotel Hotel down road due to failure of the brakes.

The accident brought the traffic to a standstill for half an hour. The Beach Road was jam packed due to Sunday.

Parking of the vehicles on the Beach Road at no parking space is also leading to accidents.

City police chief T Yoganand visited the accident spot and told newsmen that a man lost both his legs and succumbed to injuries on the spot in the incident.

The police registered a case and investigating to ascertain the exact reasons for the major mishap, he added. The identity of the deceased is yet to be established.
