Actually, I kinda wonder how true that whole story is. Plenty of reasons for a government to conjure up a whole "picnic raid" story like that. Even if only to redirect any attention to how deeply imbedded some undercovers have become it might be worth it.

They were just roaming when accidentally stumbled upon the four sleeping persons (Magomed and his cousins). Khalimbekov, who was later killed in a special operation in Izberbash on September 10, hit a teenager-hostage, his elder brother stood up for him; and then Khalimbekov "got angry and shot the man dead". Then they drove deeper into the forest and killed Magomed as well. They killed 2 of the 4 and told the youngest to go to the village and tell everyone about what happened.

They found out he's a cop when they searched his car and found his police officer ID (the small booklet they are holding and then throwing on to his head after the shot).
In a week his grandfather couldn't bear with the loss of two of his grandsons and died as well (he already had some health issues and multiplied by the stress he just couldn't go on anymore).
P.S. About the hero thing. Maybe the definition of a hero is someone who saves an entire city or whole country all by himself, however I envy his bravery when refusing to cooperate facing death at gunpoint. Soon after this happened, lots of cops in Russia decorated their cars with "We are working, brother" stickers.

Heroic act is legit. You can find video on YouTube. They did ask him to say on camera “ tell you colleagues to stop working as cops” and he replied “ Work, brothers”. Group laughed saying that he’s prolly drunk if he’s so brave and then THIS edited video starts ..

On the 16-th of august 2017, Dagestani Supreme Court sentenced Aziz Djamaludinov to a sentence of 17 years in a maximum security prison, 100k rubles fine + 2 years of restriction of liberty.
On the 3-rd of october 2017 North Caucasian military court sentenced Artur Bekbolatov (the one who films the murder) to 24 years in a maximum security prison + 2 years of restriction of liberty. Soon, the judicial chamber of Russian Federation's supreme court changed Artur Bekbolatov's sentences to a life sentence.
The other participants of the killings were annihilated in a special operation provided by FSB in september 2016.
