Since this thread has kinda derailed a bit into a Pit debate I'm going to add my 2 cents.

Yes Pits are known to attack, mangle and kill but in all fairness I'd bet at least it's a 50%/50% deal on whether it's how they're raised due to inbreeding, trained, abused etc and the other half is due to the dog just being a fucking psycho and turning on a dime from pet to mauler due to the inherent genetics they have.
A lot of these attacks by Pits seem like the dog just turns for no reason, especially when the kids are bitten.
Dogs and cats seem to know that a child is harmless and give the kid a pass when the child is playing to rough or abruptly waking the animal from a deep sleep. The attacks by Pits on kids is inexcusable in my eyes, attacks on adults could be due to mishandling or the "switch" is flipped and they go bonkers?
If ever it would be possible I think it would be a good idea if people had to jump through a couple legal hoops to own K9's that are prone/known to attack IE Pits, Rots, Shepherds etc etc.
If you want to own vipers, big cats or other exotic animals one has to attain a special permit, why not these breeds as well?

When I was much younger a lady friend of mine got a little brindle Pit puppy and it was a cute little shit, it grew into a very well behaved dog. The dog was fixed, brilliant, docile, loving and gentle, that dog and I had a fantastic friendship and he loved the shit out of me and I him, He was 120lbs of solid muscle and wanted nothing more than to be your buddy and sit on your lap. If a stranger knocked on the door he'd wag his tail because he thought he'd get treats and petted by a new friend.
One day playing tug-o-war with his rope that fucker changed, he dropped his end of the rope and looked at me all weird with his piercing black eyes and started snarling at me, I got the fuck out of there. Later in the week my friend called me and told me the dog attacked her and bit the shit out her for what seemed as no reason, he just turned on her? That dog had the life any dog would dream of, spoiled rotten and a huge yard to play in, the best care possible but yet it went goofy? She had to get rid of him because he was so unpredictable and with her grandkids, nieces and nephews always over so she just couldn't take the chance.
