Re: Woman Suffering from Postpartum Depression Jumps from High-rise Balcony

You didn't invite me, but as someone whose body spent 10 months creating another human and then giving birth to that human, followed by years of being responsible for that human's every need, more than a few of your points made me raise an eyebrow. 😅

You're certainly entitled to your opinion, but I think you're oversimplifying a pretty complex issue.

The fact that women have historically given birth under harsher conditions doesn't really prove postpartum depression isn't real. People have survived all sorts of physical and mental hardships throughout history. That doesn't mean those conditions weren't real. It means some humans are more resilient than others.

Postpartum depression is not some new modern luxury problem. Historical accounts describing the condition go back centuries. It simply wasn't as well understood, diagnosed, or discussed as it is today.

The squirrel comparison also doesn't really hold up. Humans aren't squirrels. Human infants are far more dependent, human brains are far more complex, and human social structures, emotional bonds, and psychological vulnerabilities are significantly different. Evolution didn't stop with the squirrel.

I also think the rape comparison is a false equivalence. A man experiencing sexual urges is not going through pregnancy, childbirth, recovery, massive hormonal changes, sleep deprivation, and in some cases postpartum depression or psychosis. Those situations are not remotely comparable.

As for hormones, considering all of the above, postpartum depression isn't just a woman deciding to feel sorry for herself.

And I admit I find part of this discussion a little amusing. You're speaking with a great deal of certainty about an experience you've never lived through firsthand.

You don't have to agree with every diagnosis, every treatment, or every explanation that's offered, but dismissing the entire condition as weakness, laziness, or self pity doesn't really line up with what we know about it medically.

So basically you are arguing that hormones compel some people and not others.

Refer to my original argument.

And while we're on the subject of mollifying depressed women, let's discuss legalizing prostitution to mollify depressed men.

I did refer to your original argument. My entire response was written in direct response to it. 😅

In fact, I spent several paragraphs explaining why reducing the discussion to hormones alone misses the point entirely. Somehow all of the pregnancy, childbirth, recovery, sleep deprivation, postpartum depression, postpartum psychosis, and even the squirrel disappeared and we ended up back at "hormones."

I argued that postpartum depression involves far more than hormones. That's a very different argument from saying hormones compel behavior.

As for prostitution, once again, I don't see the comparison you're making. Depression and sexual frustration are not interchangeable concepts. Many people experiencing depression have reduced libido and less interest in sex, not more.

Much like your earlier rape comparison, you're taking two fundamentally different situations and treating them as equivalent because hormones happen to be involved somewhere in the equation. That's like comparing apples to lawnmowers.

Human behavior is rarely explained by hormones alone. Rape, for example, is understood to involve a complex mix of factors including power, control, entitlement, hostility, antisocial traits, lack of empathy, situational influences, and cultural attitudes toward consent. Sexual desire may be part of the equation, but "his hormones made him do it" is generally considered an oversimplification for the same reason that "her hormones made her do it" is.

Then there's still the very important distinction that you're speaking on postpartum with such certainty despite never having experienced pregnancy, childbirth, postpartum recovery, or any of the other factors you've largely ignored firsthand.

At this point, I can't be sure you didn't just skim my post. You're addressing a simplified version of it that bears little resemblance to what I actually wrote, so I'm going to set this down and leave it at that. 😅🐿️🍎🚜

Do babies suffer from post-maternal depression?
Infant suicide? Fantastic!
