Venezuela Prison Riot Kills 16 Inmates The Associated Press Tuesday, January 2, 2007; 9:24 PM CARACAS, Venezuela -- Rival gangs battled for control in a prison in eastern Venezuela Tuesday, killing 16 inmates and injuring 13, authorities said Tuesday. Fanny Marquez, a federal prison official, said some inmates were killed with guns and knives and others were hanged before prison authorities regained control of Uribana Prison near the city of Barquisimeto, some 175 miles west of the capital of Caracas. National Guard troops restored order Tuesday morning after the riot broke out overnight, Marquez told the state-run Bolivarian News Agency. "It was a fight for control of two cell blocks," Marquez said. "We have the situation under control." Violence is common in Venezuela's overcrowded and understaffed prisons, where about 20,000 inmates live in 30 facilities built to hold 15,000. Prisoners often bribe guards to get weapons. Marquez said authorities have already been hiring additional staff to stop prisoners from smuggling in guns or making crude weapons in their cells. At least 378 inmates were killed and 883 were injured from January through November in prison violence last year, according to the watchdog group Venezuelan Prisons Observatory. Some 411 inmates were killed and 737 were injured in 2005.
