Not a vid request but
with barrels of gasoline stored in basement, petrol is flamible but not inherently explosive, so how the hel did this explosion actually happen?

Chemistry. Liquid petroleum is dense and I've actually witnessed a demonstration of putting out a flame with gasoline (IKR?). But when the liquid evaporates into a gas it becomes HIGHLY explosive. Add that gas to air and the only thing you need is a spark or flame to set off a rapid external combustion explosion (BIG BOOM). It's the same principle behind the internal combustion engine.
