I wouldn't put much if any stock in the political affiliations of nutjobs like these. Whenever something like this happens, all the little partisan morons start piping up about liberals and republicans and accusing the side they disagree with of always producing every mass shooter ever. It's asinine. Except for guys like Hodgkinson and Loughner, who had obvious political motivations given their targets, most mass shooters are not all that heavily invested in politics. The simple truth is that everyone has political views, so of course mass shooters will as well. Doesn't mean that their politics is what drove them to the act, because that's simply not the case with the majority of them.

But yeah, I heard that clip that's on LiveLeak. It was in a number of places even on day 1. I just always wonder exactly how situations like that degenerate into such violent incidents, and Riehl evidently recorded hours of footage prior to the shooting, so I'm chomping at the bit to see it given that it's such a rare occurence to have so much documentation straight from the source.

Well, Loughner wasn't particularly vocal in his politics. Some say he had socialist views, others say libertarian views. He was mentally distraught, and you can see it in his mugshot (the shaved bald head and wild eyes that remind me of the Mystery Man from Lost Highway).
As for Hodgkinson, his views were mostly leftist but he was also pretty vocal in his contempt for Hillary Clinton.
I try not to make a big deal out of politics. I just despise hyper-partisanship and extremism of any stripe, discrimination of any stripe.
Regarding Riehl, I stumbled upon an article that documented his descent into madness. Supposedly, he was an aspiring lawyer several years ago. Back in Wyoming, I think. But after that, he slowly lost his grip on reality and slid down into the abyss. Now he's six feet under, literally speaking. I didn't read whether drugs or alcohol played a role in this, even a slight role, but I wouldn't be surprised.
