Watch closer, the guy started firing back.

You don't shoot to wound, you don't shoot to kill, you shoot to eliminate a deadly threat, and since the guard got shot in the leg and couldn't see the fact he'd dropped the gun at some point, he could only assume the man was still potentially a deadly threat.

Frankly, if you don't want to get shot, don't pull out a gun like you're rambo.
