It was difficult to tell exactly what happened based on the the dashcam. After watching the bodycam footage, all I can say is that I feel bad for everyone involved. PCP is a hellluva drug.
I believe that everything he said was legit. He was probably a decent person who simply got ahold of some bad weed. He realized he was experiencing a dissociative episode and was trying to get help.
Up until the very last moment, this was a response to a medical emergency (albeit with some additional risk). With the obvious exception of not securing the weapon, I think that the police handled themselves fairly well. I do not think even the victim knew that he was about to become suicidal.
Some may say they should have cuffed him as a precaution. The cops probably contemplated the same thing, but decided not to. If he was on PCP, things could have escalated very quickly.
Had the paramedics gotten there sooner, he may have felt like himself a few hours later.
Unfortunately, he experienced an overwhelming impulse to harm himself and had the opportunity to act on it. In a dissociated state, simply looking at the the gun may have been what triggered the response (no pun intended).
Definitely not the typical shooting. Thanks to both of you for posting.
This is why, even as a ardent proponent of the right to bare arms, there needs to be some accountability for the fact that the only reason this was able to happen was because the
Good Guy With A Gun™ brought a gun into a situation where it was not necessary.
Upon careful review of the video, it would appear the suicide was intentional, though at first I thought maybe he was trying to shoot the cop behind him and did a Whoopsie.
