I would say it was a snub nose revolver. They like to spit alot of powder plus gas escapes at the sides. They are made for up close dirty work. Even after over century they still get the job done. Count the shots, im guessing 5 or 6  |

I'd say it is mainly because of cheap ammo, lots of unburned powder it would be even worse with a short barrelled pistol or snub nose revolver.

all smokeless powder makes sparks...google "gunshot wound powder burns". some videos capture it and some don't, depending on lighting/ISO/etc |
