Great to see the exact same thing is happening in the UK as what is happening in the USA down to the postmortem family statements to the media, but without the whole history of slavery thing which was used to "explain" it in the USA for decades. Deterrence is defense.

If you create a reasonable expectation that fucking with indigenous peoples’ kids will have consequences, you will reduce the rate at which that occurs, which protects your loved ones. It also selects for people who don’t behave like that, since they die before they have a chance to pop out three wild oats.

If, on the other hand, you place the cost on the indigenous people as the UK does, you select heavily for the worst possible people, especially in the new population (which is, let’s say, a little stigmatizing down the line), and end up with the hell you deserve.

This is well studied in connection with evolutionary biology, and was mentioned by Dawkins in The Selfish Gene in the section on strategies and stable equilibria etc, if memory serves.
