In South Africa (largely a British colony) most home owners who do not live in secured, fenced off communities, fall prey to all kinds of crime.

My cousin has bars on their lower windows, a steel gate between the upstairs bedrooms and the downstairs, three dogs (one of which is the South African farming dog, the boerboel (here), and some rather heavy weaponry.

Keep in mind this is a country where the flamethrower car alarm was utilized.

When I was just a pup my Uncle gave me my first gun to hold, granted he's a bit of a wacist (whiny racist) but he's had to protect his family before.

That being said, it is a civilized country (now, post-apartheid), that is in critical unrest due to the indigineous and black (northern south african) people having had their homes taken and reoccupied, their farms, and forced in to similar living conditions as the American (USA) slave housing (only worse).

My first trip back I was 7 years old, there was a shanty town (housing made of cardboard, mud, and some corregated metal) that stretched for 11km along the highway. On the other side of the highway, there was a very tall cement fence separating the two communities.
