There was no whirlpool or quicksand there. That was just deep water with a layer of floating debris.

That was a classic group drowning scenario where one or more parties does not know how to swim and finds themself in deep water. The first drowner panics and pulls down anybody they can grab. With a group, usually everybody gets pulled under by chain reaction, regardless of their swimming ability. In this vid, that 3rd guy was lucky to escape the grip of the other 2 victims.

Moving river water currents can push people into strainers (fallen trees, etc.) and cause drownings. However, Rio Grande is slow moving, and is especially slow in deep sections. I saw no evidence of currents in that vid. In fact, that floating debris was there because there was no current to move it downstream.

I only saw a classic group drowning.

The party seen not coming back up first is the one who doesn't know how to swim and he definitely killed the other that died.

There were three drowning adult men in a blind panic and anyone who would try to help them would be dragged under with them. Too dangerous for anyone to attempt rescue.
