Moving river water currents can push people into strainers (fallen trees, etc.) and cause drownings. However, Rio Grande is slow moving, and is especially slow in deep sections. I saw no evidence of currents in that vid. In fact, that floating debris was there because there was no current to move it downstream.

I only saw a classic group drowning.

I've never seen a child stuck like that in water. Let's call it a complex slurry / mixture of water with colloidal suspension. It's probably not a non-newtonian fluid per se, but it seems to be more viscous than water. Look at the way it adheres to that afro!

The incident with supposed border patrol indifference was a lady with child who waded a bit from shore and started screaming for the border patrol boats to "save me". They investigated at close range, determined she could safely walk back to shore with minimal effort, and she eventually did. Must be a common tactic, wade out near US patrols and cry for help, but they ain't buyin' it.

Definitely a group drowning. The floating debris might have been "quick sand-ish" since it looks like something that can provide some support to hold on to but doesn't.
