It's very extremely likely that when his hands were chopped, or his face ripped off, whichever came 1st, that he went into shock, and didn't know what was happening the rest of the time. Shock is the bodies last defense against extreme agony like this. Im sure he knew some of what was happening but not all.

Shock -- or, more specifically, haemostatic shock -- is when the body's blood pressure drops to fatal or near-fatal levels due to blood loss, and unconsciousness begins to set in due to oxygen deprivation in the brain. It's basically the point at which a trauma victim officially starts dying. It's not the same thing as being mentally "shocked" due to fear or trauma, but evidently a lot of folks think it is. I blame poorly-researched medical dramas. If I'm wrong here, then I hope someone like docfr8 corrects me, but it was someone like him who explained it to me in the first place, so...  My point is that this guy was along for pretty much the entire ride because he hadn't lost enough blood to go into haemostatic shock. He was conscious, and you can even see his eyes open and focus when his neck is getting sliced. Our bodies don't really give as much of a fuck about keeping us comfortable while we're being murdered as most of us would like to think. If anything, the adrenaline of fight-or-flight makes that fairy tale a bit impossible. Dying will always suck. |

I'm astounded and disturbed by what the body can endure before death. I want to go they way my grandfather did - in his sleep. Not kicking and screaming the way his passengers did!
