Ha! And I thought the Asiana Airline crew would win this year's Darwin award. The conductor of this train clearly takes the prize. Doing 120MPH on a 50MPH section of track. He also posted on Facebook photos of the speedometer in the past at 125MPH.

Here's a tidbit:

The driver of the train had a Facebook page (that has since been taken down, read on) where he bragged about how fast he could go in his car, motorcycle, and... yes, you guessed it... the trains he ran.

So, it could have been mechanical failure... or it could have been a douche being a douche and intentionally pushing the train too hard.
