Yah, I’d rather do it myself and save not only myself, and also my family the serious danger that they were in, just by association.

As I said before, I believe that he didn’t ‘want’ to kill himself, hence the hesitation, and probably a too small caliber pistol, causing the issues he had.
He was more determined to finish the job than most people would be.
I am sorry he felt that he had no choice.
