If the impact was hard enough to tear his aorta, wouldn't it also have been severe enough to break both of his legs?

Personally, I think that would have been survivable had he gone in cleanly.

How do you know his legs aren't broken? And if his legs went in cleanly but his body was bent, his body would stop but his organs continue to travel at 100 mph, tearing at their attachments.

If his legs were broken, he wouldn't have been able to do those initial kicks so effortlessly before he lost consciousness.

Given that he was still mostly vertical as he hit the water, the lower extremities and spine would absorb much more of the energy than his internal organs.

If he had hit more horizontally, I'd be more open to the possibility of cardio thoracic trauma.

Because he didn't, I think he took it on the chin, his head snapped back, and he lost consciousness shortly afterward.

I'm of the opinion that he may have been fine if someone had been able to get to him in time to lift his face out of the water until he came to.
