Its just a poor coping mechanism, like drink or drugs, it makes you feel better for a bit. People use it to cope with strong emotions like depression, for some people its a way of not killing themselves.

Thats a good analogy - I self harmed for 20years in the end there were many differeant reasons i did it -depression ,aggression, fear, anxiety,anxiety ,anxiety,shock,wound manipulation was kinsd of the last 10 years nr5 - present ... Self harm is such a taboo subject. People are quick to judge and say that it is all for attention. I can say that not all self harmers are doing it for attention. Those fuckers who film it or take photos then put them on the web are more than likely doing it for attention. I have in a previous post that I have nearly 200 scars on my arms (yeah I counted them one night when I was bored!) and I have to live with them always there, always seeing them.

I haven't self-harmed in 2 years now and I am proud of that fact. I was doing it for years as a release. I never showed it off like it was something to be proud of, I would hide my arms at all times. Even now I cover up as much as I can. Only thing I am proud of now is getting the help I needed in time and now my life is great.

In response to the cutting: While studying these types of interactions from people, I learned that cutting is usually associated with attention. This is in no way my opinion, just studies have shown that. If a person wants to hurt themselves to "mask the pain", they will usually burn rather then cut.
