Such a massive wound, once "closed" and packed, could, with the help of gravity, drain infection directly out of his head via his "chin", perhaps. He might rest face-down to drain the wound properly, away from his system. A lot of dressing changes and a prolonged healing period for this unfortunate one. What the hell would you close a hole like that with? I doubt very much that it was survivable. Someone can happily prove me wrong, but from what I see he's toast, poor sod!
