They have a contract with employers that doesn't really give them any rights. They're paid poorly and they are charged for their housing and uniforms and transportation to and from their place of employment. You sure you are referring to Singapore maid and not Hong Kong? Singapore maid paid according to market rate. They stay together with the employer in a given room. They normally travel with the employer in their car, taxi or Grab. If taking MRT, the employer will be paid for it. They will also be paid for the meals if they are eating outside. There are many cases of ill-treating the maid. The employer can be local and can be foreigner. Quite some cases are the maid them self not doing well. A lot of the maid from neighbor country being "cheater" telling them that the life is very easy being a maid so the agent can earn commission money. Many maid actually don't even do house works when they are at their own home. So after knowing that the life are so different and they cannot just quit and go home because of the contract, problem incurred. And things like this happened.
