In a situation like this, with multiple officers on scene, one of them (contacting officer) should be in a "Less-Than-Lethal" mode with his Taser drawn. Backup officers should be the only ones with their sidearm un-holstered. Everyone has (regardless of training) a different "Impulse Control" trigger and that's what makes the difference between a dead/wounded suspect, and one you can arrest, charge and procececute.
