Students Fall from Four-story Student Residence Engulfed in Flames
Senegal. Protests at the Cheikh Anta Diop University in Dakar erupted in chaos over unpaid scholarship stipends and the subsequent closure of campus cafeterias. Clashes involved students throwing stones and security forces responding with tear gas. As a result one of the rooms caught fire and student were trapped inside and on the roof of the building. Some tried to escape by climbing out of the windows and lowering themselves holding onto clotheslines. One student, Abdoulaye Ba, a second-year dental surgery/medical student, died during the unrest. While the government labeled the death a tragedy, the student association and several witnesses allege Ba was tortured or severely beaten by police in his room. At least 16 students were injured, including several in serious condition. Victims reported stitched wounds from police batons and injuries from jumping out of buildings to escape flames. Authorities have detained approximately 105 students at the central police station in Dakar. |

Its almost like climbing on the roof of a building and rioting was a bad idea. I'm not suggesting law enforcement were blameless by any means (nor the government for failing to make payments) but if the students started the disorder (as a response to the unfair situation they were in) then it was they who created the situation police had to deal with. I suspect this might be a cultural issue where both sides need to find better ways to address grievances. |
