Re: South Korea - 140+ People Dead In Stampede During Halloween Celebration
When there a crowd crush making it hard to breathe you’ve got to put your arms up and elbows out in front of your, interlace your fingers together with your palm pressing against each other and make a trapezoid with your arm segments to defend the free space that your rib cage needs to expand. If you don’t do this your ability to inhale is at the mercy of the crowd. If you do do this they’d have to break your arms to suffocate you, but they’d harm themselves before pressures get that high. You should also try to push back equally on those pushing on you so you don’t propagate or worse amplify the pressure transmitted to the person on the other side of you.

that knowledge is important & potentially useful to have, however, based on the research that has been done on crowd behavior, both individuals & on crowds themselves, it is very unlikely that a person who finds themselves stuck in a crowd will be able to think logically enough to remember such information. crowd control exists for a reason & only works when it's implemented.

Re: South Korea - 140+ People Dead In Stampede During Halloween Celebration
Makes sense… By the time most people would think to do it they’re already panicked and trying to get out. Even worse is many people will intentionally push *with* the crowd, either instinctively, or because similarly motivated, or even just to feel like they’re participating, which IMO is criminally irresponsible since it can be a death sentence for the unsuspecting person at the very end who is backed up against an immovable object.

Re: South Korea - 140+ People Dead In Stampede During Halloween Celebration
from the book "Extreme Fear: The Science of Your Mind in Danger"— In many of the past century’s most deadly fires the leading cause of death was not burning or smoke inhalation but being crushed to death in a panicked stampede. There doesn’t even need to be an actual threat, so long as the crowd believes that there is one. Among the worst mass fatalities during the German bombing campaign against London in World War II was an incident that took place when a crowd of civilians lined up outside the shelter in the Bethnal Green Underground Station. An air-raid siren had sounded several minutes before, but the crowd didn’t panic until a nearby anti-aircraft battery fired a salvo of rockets. A woman carrying an infant stumbled at the top of the steps leading down into the station; the surge of the crowd behind them caused hundreds more to fall. Amid the din of the guns and rockets, no one could hear the screams of the men, women, and children being crushed to death. Those at the back, unable to move forward and fearing that they were being forcibly excluded from safety, pushed harder. Within 15 minutes, 173 people had died. In a twist of grim irony, not a single bomb had fallen."

Re: South Korea - 140+ People Dead In Stampede During Halloween Celebration
Here in the west the security / staff would be lifting up people from the front of the crowd who look to be in bad shape, one by one, and pulling them out (both to save them and to relieve pressure,) but here they seem to have just stood directly in front of individuals as they were being crushed to death and did nothing to stop it. WTF?
