Ak-47 aka AKM is a great weapon. Some of our Special Forces still took the old AKM with them in Chechnya.

We carried AK-74Ms and were happy with lighter 5.45 caliber. We could carry more ammo, and it was more controllable on bursts or full auto. Non of us used full auto during engagements, but a PKM gunner. We always fired in disciplined 3-4 round bursts even during suppressive fire. Chechens were also very skilled with their weapons. They knew our tactics and thought a move ahead of us.

However our spetsnaz partners preferred AKMs when we worked with them in mountainous regions of Chechnya (Ulus Kert, Vedeno, Itum Kali).

5.45 AK-74 has a great damage due to its tumbling effect inside of flash, but every stupid twig, bush, or a tree branch would stop and change the bullets direction quickly. Their AKMs cut all the obstacles in front of them and it helped us a lot on a few occasions to push more in.

Even in Grozny back in 2000 street to street their AKMs were going through brick walls and hard cover where beards were well protected, or as they thought they were.

Yes I know what Im talking about when it comes to weapons. AKM is a very effective weapon, mentally and physically. It goes bang when you pull the trigger, and in combat if you have a few of your brothers watching your six it is the sweetest feeling of life.

M-16/M4 is a very accurate weapon, like a surgeons tool. But you have to keep it clean and well oiled, you also have to make sure you shoot good ammo through it. But its a very respectful weapon. My buddies had some fun with it in Georgia in 2008 :)
