A significant part of the Russian military is made up of conscripts serving their mandatory 1 year of service. Many are near the end of their term and really don't want to fight the Ukrainians. Many more are at the beginning of their terms and don't know where Ukraine is.

Putin cannot keep this up for much longer. His Special Forces paratroopers suffered fearful losses and failed to seize Kiev and hold it until the tanks arrived. At least 2 Russian troop transport aircraft were shot down with a Company onboard each one. Many of the tanks didn't make it either, thanks to those American made Javelin missiles.
Russia has not won this war, but more importantly, Ukraine has not lost it either. The last thing Russian troops want to attempt is another insurgent war like they lost in Afghanistan.

This is far from over, but the real economic realities are going to hit the Russians starting Monday morning. Putin may be reduced to raging in his bunker before much longer.

Russia's military sucks ass. The only thing going from them is the threat of nukes.
