Before the mods can us both for being off topic: I like your take on most of the above. When Clay/Ali was in the beginning of his career, his was indeed a novel style of fighting - for a heavyweight. The way he moved, he was almost like an oversized bantamweight. He put great emphasis on not being hit, bragging that he looked as "pretty" after a fight as he did before it. Thus his style of keeping at a distance while drawing fire (which he knew he could avoid) and counter punching rather than bulling in up close, slugging, and taking his chances. Later on, when he no longer had the blinding speed of hand and foot he used clinching more and went for the wear down - he was always a big man. I often found his fights in his later years boring. |
