Re: Russia - Woman Disappears Under Ice
Ugh, yep. All of that. When they started to panic, and the kids started crying, that was bad enough but all I could think of was that in that moment she was still alive. She wasn't dead yet, but they had no way to get to her. Just awful.

Re: Russia - Woman Disappears Under Ice
People are stupid every where. But Russian people are right up their with Chinese people as the stupidest people on earth. If any of you don't know the history, the true story of the short war between Russia and Japan, do yourself a favor and read about it. Particularly the Baltic Fleets escapades around the world to "surprise" Japan. I wish they would make a movie. Zach Galifianakis would be perfect for one of the Russian captains. Basically picture a bunch of Zach Galifianakis and that's the Russian Navy. It was so full of unbelievable gaffs and boneheaded moves, if they did make the movie, nobody would ever think it's a true story unless you told them. |

Re: Russia - Woman Disappears Under Ice
Ice swimming is fairly common in most of the arctic circle. Popular with tourists in nordic countries too. You don't go walking in the snow and swimming in a hole on the lake immediatly, you spend a good amount of time in a hot sauna first. When you come out, you don't even feel the cold. By the time it starts feeling cold, you get back in the sauna. Jumping in "Avanto"-hole is not recommended though for multiple safety reasons: 1) You might accidentally slip under the ice as what happened here. 2) Sauna already saps persons strength, making your muscles feel relaxed but lowering muscle coordination as a result. 3) The water causes a bit of a cold shock for the first 2 seconds. Usually harmless but can cause a short muscle paralysis with some people. Other problem in the video is that the hole is super-narrow. It should be way wider precisely to prevent stuff like this from happening. And judging from the text the hole is carved in a busy river with presumably strong undercurrents, instead of a calm lake. Its not as extreme a practice as it looks. The woman did a stupid stunt, equal to trying to jump and do a somersault in a wet and slippery bathroom. |

Re: Russia - Woman Disappears Under Ice
You know that in that moment the husband suddenly realized what happened and that he can’t save her. She’s somewhere under the ice trying to get free terrified in the dark and he just witnessed his life changing in half a second. Truly invigorating! |

"Why do Russians swim in freezing water?" Religious ice swimming Every year on the Epiphany (19 January in Russia) Russian Orthodox believers are plunged into a blessed section of frozen water three times in remembrance of Jesus' baptism in the river Jordan by John the Baptist.Mar 2, 2021 |
