Typical canopy size is measured by the person weight. 1 square foot of canopy per pound of body weight. My main was a “135” and I weighed around 155 lbs back then. My main was 20 square feet smaller than a 155 would be and my reserve was a “115”. Both of those would have been small looking but holy shit can they fly! In flight, when you get good at canopy control, you can swing yourself over the top… it’s exciting as anything you’ve ever done in your life… no kidding… I did a hop & pop at 16,000 feet with a beanbag hacky sack. Once you get out of the plane and deploy your parachute you toss the hacky and then start chasing it as it gets carried by the wind. If your good you can capture it in one of the cells of your chute. That in itself is one of the craziest things to do in skydiving… you are working those toggle lines like crazy trying to catch it. Good fun!!!  |
