He had good half a minute of time to simply open the driver side door and climb out. If he would be just half-way through the window when the car suddenly sinks, he would've been saved because the river is shallow. Baffling why he refused to do that, wouldn't that be the very first instinct any person would have when this happens?

In the 70's and 80's pretty frequently there were new stories about cars or snowmobiles breaking thru ice on lakes around here (Chicago area) and people drowning. You don't hear about it anymore, maybe people learned not to drive on frozen lakes or the public doesn't care anymore so it's not newsworthy.

I would try to save them, but not if it was unsafe and there weren't safety ropes and Westerners available (I wouldn't trust my life to a safety rope with an Russian or other Asian holding onto it). Nothing worse than loosing more people to save a drunken asshole...

Its also because nowadays you can predict how thick the ice is going to get in each lake quite accurately and put warning signs on spots of the lakes that have weak ice every year. You can drive cars on ice here just fine, usually newspapers and sites inform along weather forecasts when its going to get warmer and ice starts getting dangerous.
