In the 70's and 80's pretty frequently there were new stories about cars or snowmobiles breaking thru ice on lakes around here (Chicago area) and people drowning. You don't hear about it anymore, maybe people learned not to drive on frozen lakes or the public doesn't care anymore so it's not newsworthy.

That guy stepping closer didn't help much, car immediately slid further under.

I would try to save them, but not if it was unsafe and there weren't safety ropes and Westerners available (I wouldn't trust my life to a safety rope with an Russian or other Asian holding onto it). Nothing worse than loosing more people to save a drunken asshole...
