I think it was because a) the spade was still lodged in place stopping the brain from hemorrhaging and b) the video was taking very soon after the event. I suspect he would have died instantly if they tried to remove it but something tells me he never made it that far...

Seeing as the shovel only goes into the frontal lobe, I am not surprised he is still alive. Even if he was dead from that, his body would move around from remaining nerve impulses for a while.

You don't have any nerve receptors in your brain. That is why he is acting like nothing is wrong. He most likely died soon after this video was taken.
