I think he was trying to calm down and/or work himself up to the courage to carry out the suicide. (In the 19-20+ hours of his video diary, you see and "get to know him much better" and in that final tape, what isn't shown in the widely seen version and is edited out is that he says "I'm getting a little nervous now" or something to that effect.)
