Their behavior was quite correct. They were spectators, not participants in the act. They did exactly what they were there for - they watched the show.

If he was being suffocated like normal I think he would’ve grabbed at the snake more purposefully. The jerking suggests brain damage from internal decapitation. His neck looks super long after they get the snake off it too !
