Police Shoot Suspect After He Grabs Officer's Gun

San Diego, California – On January 24, 2020, at approximately 3:42 p.m., two uniformed San Diego police officers were in the area of 2900 54th Street when they attempted to make an enforcement stop. The contact turned into a foot pursuit, which ultimately ended in a fatal officer involved shooting. Investigators from the San Diego Police Homicide Unit were called to the scene to investigate the incident. Although it is very early in the investigation, based on witness statements and the brief statement given by the officers involved, the man was uncooperative when the officers attempted to contact him. He ran from the officers and they chased him into the traffic lanes of 54th Street.

The man then ran eastbound through bushes and onto the frontage road, at which time he began struggling with the officers. The officers gave him verbal commands to stop resisting but he refused to cooperate. One of the officers believed the man was grabbing his gun and alerted his partner, who eventually fired one round from his service weapon striking the man. The man continued struggling but was eventually taken into custody. The officers provided medical aid until San Diego Fire-Rescue personnel arrived and pronounced him deceased. One witness described the subject as having something in his hand as the officers struggled with him.

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — One person is dead following an officer-involved shooting in the Oak Park area Friday.

Police were in the area of the 2900 block of 54th Street at about 3:45 p.m. when they tried to make an enforcement contact with a suspect. San Diego Police Lt. Matt Dobbs said it wasn't clear what the stop was in regards to until officers involved were interviewed.

Police said the suspect became "extremely agitated" and fled on foot. Officers chased the suspect and caught up to the man, where an altercation started with one officer. Police say the officers gave him verbal commands to stop resisting but he refused to cooperate.

During the struggle, the officer said he felt the suspect pull at his weapon. A second officer fired one shot at the suspect and the fight ended. Lt. Dobbs added that the suspect ripped the gun and holster completely from the first officer's belt.

"Not only was the suspect grabbing at the officer's gun, but in fact, he ripped the gun and the holster completely from the officer's belt," Lt. Dobbs said.

Lt. Dobbs said the suspect was shot in the upper body.

"Cop jump off him, and just took his gun and just, popped him and jumped back on him again," said Carlitos Figueroa, who says he witnessed the shooting take place from about 20 feet away. "It happened so fast. He took off and then zip zap and then they jumped on him and then he struggled and that's it, boom."

Officers on scene provided first aid to the suspect until San Diego Fire-Rescue crews arrived. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity has not been released. Lt. Dobbs said the suspect appears to be a Hispanic male in his 30s or 40s.

The officers involved in this incident are both patrol officers assigned to Southeastern Division. Their names are not being released at this time.

Lt. Dobbs said no weapon was recovered at the scene other than the officer's handgun that had been pulled from his belt.

Police closed streets around 54th and Krenning streets while they investigated.
The San Diego Police Department released a highly produced video Wednesday that includes video from an officer’s body camera showing his partner fatally shooting a man who was resisting arrest.

The video, which was posted to YouTube, is introduced by San Diego Police Chief David Nisleit and includes an animated map, video from a smart street light camera and video from a police body camera. Nesleit said the video shows a shooting that happened on Jan. 24, 2020, when police tried to take a man into custody near the intersection of 54th Street and College Grove Drive.

Two patrol officer pulled over after observing Toby Diller, 31, acting erratically while drinking from an open container, Nesleit said. The street light video shows Diller on the street corner when a police patrol car pulls up. As officers get out of the car, Diller runs away from them into the street and the officer chase him on foot.

The officers in the patrol car were identified in captions as Officers Downing and Johnson. The video includes Downing’s body camera, which begins as the patrol car comes to a stop and show the two officers chasing Diller. When the officers catch up with Diller he begins struggling. At one point, Downing says, “He’s got my gun! Shoot him!”

An officer can be seen pulling out his firearm and shooting Diller in the head from about two feet away. Police identified the officer who fired his gun as Officer Johnson.

After the shooting, the officers handcuffed Diller. When paramedics arrived, they began treating Diller, but he died at the scene, according to the YouTube video.

“Unfortunately he died at the scene”.

Why unfortunately? Seems about right to me.

Re: Police Shoot Suspect After He Grabs Officer's Gun

Around 80% of criminals repeat offend after they get out of jail. And that's only the ones who get caught. A small fraction of the population commits all the crimes. Every one of them who gets his stupid ass killed by fighting with the police represents many, many crimes that don't get committed because the fucking animal is not around any more. This effect is greater when the bozo is young. Thank you, officers.
