This is hard to judge for me, as the cop was very patient with him, but we couldn't see the victims eyes before the gunfire. The cop obviously could see his life in danger. Even if someone is coming at you slowly, when it's on, IT'S ON!; good guys don't always finish last.

I like how everyone makes the excuses "well he was drunk" or "he's bipolar" or "he's got mental issues" like that makes everything ok.

I'm not a gun nut or anything, but I probably would have shot him too. Not all cops carry tazers. You carry whatever you're issued, and not all counties issue that shit.

Could this have been handled differently? Sure...when you have lots of time to think things over, sure. There are at least 3 different scenarios I can imagine while I get to hit rewind on the video and examine everything. But honestly, in that situation, all I was thinking was "Michael Meyers, fucking shoot!!"

Also, was that the sound of blood pouring out of the guy on the floor at 2:14?

In the Army you are taught that if you shoot you shoot to kill.. You do not take the risk of trying to hit a small target like a leg as the threat is still there... You are taught to shoot at the largest of the targets where a kill is most certain (the chest area)

Let me ask you this.... You are in the armed forces in Afghanistan.. A 12 year old insurgent armed with an AK47 flies out of a door in front of you and turns towards you with his weapon system in hand... What choice do you make?... Aim at his weapon in the hope you will knock it out his hands because he is only a boy???!

Some of you have very little understanding of knives.

When a cop with a gun tells you to drop the knife or stop advancing on him, the exact wrong thing to do is keep the knife and keep advancing on him.

It's all good for keyboard warriors to have their opinions on what should have been done, but in the heat of the moment, shit happens. Only that officer knows why he did what he did.

Personally, I would have evacuated the building and waited until back up arrived.

some people here need to know what they're talking about before posting... first off, the only time you need to use your firearm in self defense is if you honestly feel like your life is being threatened. second, if you need to fire, you aim to kill, not wound. this is simple stuff that you learn if you ever take a class to get your C&C permit.

this cop did the right thing.

Having many law enforcement friends and family, they are trained to not take any chances when someone obvious has no fear of dying. Shoot him in the leg? That's cool, what if he's packing a small firearm that he decides to get out while he's writhing around on the ground?

One of the training videos for the state police of Connecticut is of this exact scenario and why you don't take chances. Ultimately, it is up to the police officer, but they advise you not to. The video is of an officer who shot a man in the leg that was wielding a baseball bat. When the officer approached, he was shot in the face with a small firearm the man had holstered on his ankle.

When you have someone like this man in the video that does not care about his life, he sure as fuck doesn't give a fuck about yours. At this point, this man feels he has nothing else to lose. It's best to just take the fucker out before anyone gets hurt.
