Would probably help if folks knew what the cops knew at the time:

The man had a long history of threatening violence towards people and cops. That's why those cops were kitted out in full tactical rather than your run-of-the-mill pistols. Mentally ill or not, you pull a knife, then try to turn and run when cops are ordering you to do something, if you don't, I have no sympathy for you.

It would have been better though if the cops had bean-bagged him first. But only for the sake of PR. The guy they killed wasn't some innocent old hiker. He was a known cunt. Frankly, they did the local community a favour.
