You tease! I want to hear your two other etymologies for "honkie"... Another word/phrase with all kinds of explanations of it's origin is "the whole nine yards". I have heard at least 6 or 7 attributions and they all sounded reasonable. For example, in WW2, there was a compromise between carrying machine gun ammunition and bombs on bomber aircraft because of weight. Door and tail gunners would supposedly request their entire allotment, "the whole nine yards" (the belt length of 50 caliber ammo) so they could protect the plane and themselves. BTW, Clark Gable was a door gunner on a bomber in WW2 and was injured when FLAK hit him in the leg. Clark was Hitler's favorite actor, Eva Braun insisted on watching "Gone With the Wind" all the time. Hitler offered a large reward to anyone that captured Clark alive so Hitler could meet him. |
