Maybe he thought he could mimic Kevin Richardson. If you don't know who he is, you can find his stuff on Youtube. The guy walks into packs of lions and treats them like housecats. Belly rubs and scratchs behind the ears. Supposedly he doesn't emit the fear pheromone which triggers a wild animal to attack.
