On April 25th, a 67-year-old woman, Alba G., was walking home just after 8.45pm and crossing on a marked crosswalk when a 27-year-old off-duty policeman, driving a Jeep pickup truck, made a left-hand turn, running over Alba. Alba suffered severe head trauma, and died in hospital three days later.

The off-duty cop remained at the scene and rendered aid. The Office of Special Investigations have launched an investigation, and a few days ago, released CCTV footage of the incident.

Sad for everyone: it was dark, raining, and she was in his blind spot in a tall vehicle. Even though she was in the cross-walk, she should not have made the choice to walk in front of him with as far out as he was. Like at least wait to make eye-contact with the driver in a situation like that before crossing. I’m sure he’s traumatized too for hitting killing her accidentally.

those cars are parked too close to the crosswalk (and traffic signal) blocking driver's views. Guess he didn't saw her due to that car and was focussed on traffic coming from the right, however the cop remains liable. left, right, left.
She probably thought, oh he saw me on the last moment and stopped so i could pass without checking if he actually looked at her direction. I would have waited though as you never know.

They were both at fault , but the old woman is the main culprit. She should of waited a few seconds until the jeep cleared the crosswalk , instead of walking around it. People tend to think these damn crosswalks make them bulletproof , and hence not pay attention to their surroundings. She doesn't have to worry about that anymore though ,as she'll be wormdirt soon.

I wouldn’t say it’s her fault legally as pedestrians do have the right of way in a crosswalk. And even in a non-legal setting it’s still mostly that guys fault, he’s probably got his seat so low he can’t see anything close in front of him, or he was on his phone and not paying attention. Probably both.

But yes, people in NYC have this weird trust in crosswalks making them bulletproof. People walk across busy streets without even looking because they’re too distracted by their phones to have any survival instinct. Not that this lady was ok her phone, but a tiny bit of common sense could have saved her life.
