A 53-year-old Brooklyn man plunged to his death when an FDNY ladder suddenly gave way as he evacuated a Monday morning blaze at a Sunset Park apartment building.

Footage shows the man climbing out of a third-story window as smoke billowed out behind him — while a firefighter waited at the top of a retractable ladder to help him escape the flames. As the man stepped onto the first rung, the top section of the ladder suddenly retracted, and the man went into a spinning free fall onto the awning of a deli below before hitting the sidewalk.

The man, identified as Uber driver Ashiq H. - a native of Pakistan - was rushed to hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Two other residents were taken to hospital for smoke inhalation, whilst a firefighter suffered a leg injury.

Ashiq's cousin told media that he blamed the fire department. "They did really wrong. They took the head of the family. They ruined the family's life."

The FDNY is investigating the incident and the ladder used in the rescue has since been taken out of service. No firefighters have been disciplined or taken off duty.
It had to be India!... Wait.. this is NY? I guess they do have a thing for falling bodies there.

maybe he shouldn't have been so fat to begin with. firefighters can't haul pianos out of windows.
or left his phone, so he can cling on the window to save him from falling.

ouch. Talk about chitty luck.

very sad. Though if he been in better shape, he could've held on for a bit while they fixed the ladder.

He just climbed and imemdiately jumped down. Could not even ohold on for 1 second. Then his huge weight ensured he'd get maximum injuries from the 3rd floor.

Always check your smoke detectors.

No, I would think that extra layer of fat would make him bounce like a full bottle of mayonnaise on cheap linoleum. His bones should've been better protected
