This stuff ends when we have open source distributed autonomous swarm weapons and they realize they can always be instantly out numbered and overwhelmed and surrounded with no cover and without any exposed soft target they can easily gang up on and shoot back. Everyone is at fault here.
If you point a gun at someone, then it raises the stakes so much that no cop can afford to take the risk of looking down the barrel of a gun and gambling with their life.
If you raise a gun towards anyone...for any reason, you are willing to die. That's just how logic works. That's why there are strict gun laws saying that the gun must always be holstered...unless you intend to use it against someone or fire at a firing range.

If I were a cop, and someone raised a gun towards me, I would shoot them too. Heck...if I weren't a cop and someone raised a gun towards me, id still shoot them.


The solution to this encounter would have been communication.
Neither side communicated at all.

Cops told their identity only once....and then waited.
First time they told who they were, the family was probably asleep and couldn't hear it....and there wasn't a second attempt to identify themselves.

If you can hear someone approaching the door, you must identify yourself again, and not just ID yourself, but also explain your intentions( i.e why you are knocking on their door ).

And the guy opening the door should have done the same.
A simple "who's there" would have saved his life.

Now swap sides. A cop was the first to raise a gun here and have an innocent person woken in their sleep staring down a barrel. That means cop was willing to die right?

That innocent person has just as much right to protect themselves as any cop.

A cops life is absolutely not any more valuable than another innocent civilian. People need to stop placing cops on a pedestal and treating them like they are better than the rest of us and get priority to live over everyone else.
