This man, basically just offed himself, for less than I get in one weeks paycheck. I would NOT take up a bet threatening my life, for any amount of money for starters, but certainly not for what I get in a week.

Indeed WE would not try to do such a foolish thing for that kinda money but i partially blame the club for organizing/letting the bet happen as :

If inflation’s impact during 2013 is subtracted from that RD$14,279 salary, a worker’s real wage ended up being just RD$12,441, (265 USD) an automatic loss of 1,838 pesos.

So being a new dad means extra costs so when they can earn more as three times a month salary in a bet and you're young some might go for it.

I have had a few run-ins with Shoenice, it's normally when I mocked him about him advertising his merchandise for sale t-shirts and hats, I would always ask him if he thinks I should buy his shit so he can afford to get his stomach pumped or something.
