You’ve just highlighted one of the main criticisms people have about religion... it’s often used as a tool for control, among many other nefarious things.

I don’t need belief in a higher power to know how to act ethically or keep my behavior in check. My sense of morality is grounded in common sense, empathy, and reality - not in faith in an intangible being or ideals that have more contradictions than answers. Being a decent human being isn’t so complicated but religion can sometimes muddy the waters.
