It's considered sacred to leave dead mountaineers where they are found. Subsequent climbers also use the bodies as map markers. In 1999, climbers found the body of George Mallory, who died in a fall in 1918. His climbing partner was never found. Mountain climbers are generally very independently wealthy, because a climb on Everest costs an average of about $45K. And the training takes about a year. And then there's the cost of getting there.

They had narrowed the search area to 600x300 meters based on where Mallory fell so it wasn't entirely on coincidence but still amazing the way they ended up finding him.

That is extreme sun bleaching because they can't decompose so the skin stays exposed to sunlight
