This is the moment a man is electrocuted and collapses in the middle of the street after hitting a cable while working where a section of road had been removed to make a garden.

The incident took place in the district of Brena, in the city of Lima, the Peruvian capital, where after an explosion of sparks the man can be seen struggling to stay on his feet before collapsing from a heart attack.

Reports said that a section of road had been removed to give access to the soil underneath in order to create a small garden, but that this meant an electricity cable, that had previously been covered by tarmac, was exposed as Angel Victor Palomino Guardia, 27, started working there.

He is seen working in the patch in front of his home with what appears to be a shovel when suddenly sparks fly after he sticks his tool in the ground.

Two people – reportedly his brother and his mum who were standing next to him – are seen stepping back before the man is seen collapsing seconds later.

Antonio Palomino, the man’s brother, told local media: “The problem was that he hit a wire and received a very strong electric shock.

“He suffered a heart attack before the firefighters took him away and two more while he was being taken to the hospital.”

Palomino Guardia is still hospitalised in the Arzobispo Loayza hospital in Lima.

Local media reported that the electrical wires which caused the electric shock to the man belong to the company Enel Peru.

The company told local media that the wires were located under the road, but that the local authority had designated that area as a green area meaning it was turned into a small garden for locals.

In a statement to local media, the company confirmed that 220-volt underground wires were installed under a green area given by the municipality of Brena and that they sent technicians to the site following the incident.

Pavel Palacios, the manager of urban development of Brena, informed local media that they will investigate the accident.
