In the town of Theinni, in Myanmar's Shan state (close to the border with Yunnan, China), the MNDAA Kokang armed group, which controls the town, sentenced two out of seven people accused of murder and kidnapping to death, while the remaining five were given long prison terms, according to local residents. The two men sentenced to death were reportedly MNDAA members themselves.

Residents said every household in town was ordered to send one representative to a local marketplace, where MNDAA judicial officials publicly read out the sentences.

According to one resident:

"They hung Chinese-language signs around the necks of all seven, then read out — with translation — the crimes each had committed. Two were sentenced to death. The rest were given prison terms."

One of the executed men was accused of participating in the murder of two grandparents, while the other had allegedly killed a female Chinese-language teacher. It is unclear whether the accused had any opportunity for legal defence.

After sentencing, the two condemned men were taken to a nearby cemetery, where they were shot dead. Residents say this is the first time MNDAA has carried out public sentencing in Theinni.

The MNDAA - which forms part of the Three Brotherhood Alliance, which opposes the Burmese junta - captured Theinni, along with several other townships in northern Shan state, in late 2023.

As long as there's no doubt as to their guilt then sure, though that's usually not the case... Hopefully they didn't just get on the wrong side of whoever's in charge there.
