The writer of the piece I link to below works on the premise that he intended to kill his obsession. As she was not working that night it appears that I.M. was just unfortunate. She made eye contact with this psychopath and that was sufficient to end her life. In fact, this fucker is such a lunatic that the top name on his list of approved visitors at La Mesa, the prison in which he is being kept, is the woman who he most likely would have killed were she working that night. I will give him credit for keeping his options open though: on his arrival in prison he was hitting on the women guards.
