Re: Mexico - Cartel Decapitate Rival With A Good Blade

I wonder why cartels and Islamic terrorist groups continue to use the same inefficient sawing technique that always yields the same result?

While this wouldn't be an issue back in the day when the headless body or head on a stake sent the message, times have changed. In the era of streaming video, it is the act, not the result, that matters. Part of that message gets lost when everything turns into amateur hour because they inevitably struggle to cut through the vertebrae.

Anyone who has taken anatomy knows that while the interlocking vertebral joints keep the spinal column aligned, it's the ligaments that hold it together.

These ligaments run the length of the spinal column on all sides of the vertebral body. While a sword, machete, or meat cleaver may have enough force to get through them, a knife relies on its sharpness to do most of the work.

Attempting to saw through the vertebrae at a single point will only disrupt a small portion of all the ligaments involved. I believe it would be much more efficient to use a rocking motion with an emphasis on going around as much of the the circumference of the vertebrae as possible. Once the majority of these ligaments have been disrupted, it should only take a couple of well placed slices while pulling back on the head to complete the deed.

Part of me can't believe that I actually wrote that. I really hate watching these types of videos, but morbid curiosity always seems to get the best of me (especially when the post had this type of title).

I guess I'm saying if they're going to do something this unpleasant, at least do it more efficiently to make it a little less unpleasant.
