If the truck was equipped with an RII (Remote Ignition Interruptor) the crew could have shut the truck down and at least let it roll to a stop before going into the crowd.. RII's usually cost around 4 grand,.. which is probably why the truck didn't have one. The show usually has a couple truck involved, but I was told the promoters didn't have the extra cash for a second truck. So... shoestring budget on the part of the event.. which i'm sure is in direct relation to lack of safety. I also know, (being involved with monsters for 16+ years) that if something looks questionable, or unsafe.. probably shouldn't do it. And as for the fans.. as bad as this sounds, they had lack of respect for what was going on around them. ANYTHING can happen in motorsports, you can take as many precautions as possible, but things do happen. That truck was 32 years old, and should have never been run in that fashion.. I would be willing to bet he was trying to mimic what he has seen in the U.S. in terms of driving.. unfortunately, the worst possible situation occurred. |
